Russell Poole is a senior fisheries biologist with the Marine Institute in Ireland and is managing ecosystem, climate change and EMFF biodiversity programmes. He has specialised in salmonids and eels for more than 30 years. He was involved with investigating sea trout stock collapses in the 1990s and was also heavily involved with the development of eel stock advice and the eel recovery Regulation and Irish eel management plans. Russell has participated in International Council for Exploration of the Seas (ICES) and European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission (EIFAAC) activities since the mid-1980s. His talk will explore some aspects of fisheries science and management of diadromous fish species, highlighting some of the more recent reach and management initiatives around Europe. The talk will also reflect on the evaluation of management actions, setting baselines and how those baselines may be shifting.
